Hong Kong international schools face financial difficulties

Recently there are some international schools that wish to get financial help from the government where it can be used for improving the campus.

In Hong Kong, there are four international schools that got their proposal of no-interest loans refused that might help enhance the campus, even they are facing financial struggles during the period of coronavirus. These schools’ proposal for interest-free loans was intended to help them to pay back funds for the construction that were set to repay in 10 years.

Besides, international schools in Hong Kong are facing a very difficult time as the numbers of non-local students decreased during this period and offer tuition discounts. Even then, the legislators in Hong Kong doubts the action asking for financial support since international schools have gained more support than local schools. It queries the need for international schools to borrow public money while they charged expensive costs already. It questions if it is right to still qualify for public financial help.

Although some might feel as the government might be unfair to offer help to international schools because their financial situation might in general better than local schools. However, the government cares and would base on the real situation of what is going on, considering the financial burden on the parents, the general situation of the economy, and if the international school have enough reasons to qualify for support.

Harrow International was qualified for the financial help to deduct 20 percent of the summer term cost from April to June. This is because the school gets employment support from the government, which allows employers to afford up to HK$9000 for each staff in 6 months period.
